In 1990 wijst de regering 5 mei aan tot jaarlijkse Nationale Feestdag.
In de jaren 1990 - 1994 verspreidt het Nationaal Comité het model van de bevrijdingsfestivals over het land. Vanaf 1994 worden er op 5 mei in alle provincies en in de hoofdstad, in totaal dertien, op jongeren gerichte muziekfestivals georganiseerd. http://www.bevrijdingsfestivals.nl/bfs/
